As we enter May, & the weather warms, many of our activities move to the outdoors. Lord Baden Powell first began the Scouting movement to get boys back into the outdoors, & camping & hiking have always been favorites of Scouts around the world. It is important, however, that when we venture out we remember to leave nothing but our footprints. This idea was reinforced to me last week when I was in England. One of the places I visited was a rural area in Shropshire, where there is a program for the public to use designated “public footpaths” through the woods & across farmland and pastures. As long as people use the designated gates & stiles & remove any trash, the land will remain available for responsible farming & forestry as well as for people to hike & walk & enjoy the beautiful countryside. Continuing this practice whenever we enjoy the outdoors today will ensure it will be there for others to enjoy tomorrow.
